How to be happy

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Life can be very up and down but I had a really good week two weeks ago and a wonderful day when these photos were taken and it inspired me to write this post. I want to write about my amazing day not because I want to show off but because I want to inspire you to do things that you love and make the most of every day and be happy too.

I really believe that happiness is a state of mind and if you choose to be happy you can be. Don’t get me wrong I don’t feel happy all the time and I have my down days and many things that frustrate me, but I try to stay positive and overall I can say I am happy.

I am 37 single woman and my life is far from perfect but I always try to find time to do things I enjoy and that definitely makes me feel better. Yes I would love to meet someone wonderful to share my life with and do more things with a partner and have a family and home but in the meantime I will not sit at home, wait for my Prince Charming and be miserable.

I’m not going to lie the day when these photos were taken was quite an expensive one but it doesn’t have to be. Things I love include reading (doesn’t cost much) or even going for a walk (costs nothing). So on this particular day I met up a friend for an afternoon tea at the Sketch Gallery (pink heaven) and as much as I love to go somewhere super fancy once in a while meeting up with a good friend for a coffee and a cake is just as good. But I love dressing up and going somewhere special sometimes and why not. Save money elsewhere if you have to and treat yourself to a fancy lunch. You will love every minute.

We’ve been very lucky with the weather and October has been very mild and that day the weather was just gorgeous so I decided to walk my friend back to her place and then go for a walk in a park. I love walking and it’s really good not only for your body but also for the soul. I love London and often go for walks by the river or in the numerous parks. I sat there (in Hyde Park) for ages as well, feeling the Indian summer’s sun on my face. It felt so nice.

After I walked some more through some familiar and less familiar parts of London to the National Theatre. Can you believe it was my first time there? I love doing cultural things and I went to see Shakespeare’s play Anthony and Cleopatra, which I really enjoyed. Again it’s something I spent money on but can be done on a budget. I try to go to either ballet, opera, musical or a play every few months and I usually go for tickets in the middle price range but you can get really cheap ones too. And if you want to experience some culture without spending a penny, we’re very lucky in London because so many museums and galleries are free and there’s so much amazing art of show. I definitely recommend The National Gallery and also The Wallace Collection.

But if culture is not your thing that’s not a problem. We are all different and we all like different things. Think hard about what makes you happy and dedicate a time every week to do it and find joy in little things. Get out of your comfort zone, be spontaneous and try new things. You will find happiness I promise you.

My day was amazing and I loved every minute. It’s not something I can do every day. I don’t have time or money to do it every day, but it gives me so much joy it makes me smile for days. So it’s totally worth it. And I’m already looking forward to another day like this.

But I can tell you on another day in the same week I was very lucky with the weather again and went for a very long walk along the Thames and I only spent £15 that day in Costa for coffee, sandwich and a cake and then I took a boat ride on the river for the first time I’ve been living in London (!) and the day was just as lovely. In the evening I watched Strictly come dancing (I love that show) and that day filled me with as much joy. It really is not about spending money but realising what makes you happy and making sure you do it as much as you can.

What things make you happy?

How to wear stripes part 3 – skirt

howtowearstripesskirt5

Hopefully by now you have seen my part 1 and part 2 of how to wear stripes. I showed you how to wear striped jacket and striped top and today I want to show you how to wear striped skirt. This is a final part of this series, but to be honest I wear stripes so much you will alway see me wearing them.

As I mentioned before it’s a very easy pattern to style and it looks very chic. Just always stick to the same colour palette if it’s something very colourful already. With a simple Breton top you can add another colour but with this skirt I chose same colours for the rest of my look. I actually wore this skirt already here and chose to bring out the Burgundy out of it, here I highlighted the pink.

This skirt is so versatile despite its many colours and can be styled many ways. I love wearing it and now I’m looking at these pictures it’s making me want to put it on again soon so maybe I’ll wear it tomorrow. It’s an easy A-line shape as well which I think suits most body shapes.

I hope that with my 3 different looks I’ve inspired you to wear more stripes. Unlike some other patterns they never go out of fashion and they are a fun print. Just keep the rest of the look simple. Choose any of the colours that are featured in the print for the rest of your look (in this case you can go for white, yellow, pale blue, rust, pink, Burgundy..) and you can’t go wrong. You might think this skirt is too colourful it would be difficult to style but it’s actually very easy.

Do you like stripes?

How to wear stripes part 2 – top

howtowearstripestop7

In my new Wednesday’s series How to: I’m showing you how to wear stripes 3 different ways. You can see how I wore a striped jacket in Part 1, and today I want to expand on wearing stripy tops.

I’ve mentioned Breton top in my first post about stripes and it’s the easiest way to wear this print and you should definitely have some in your wardrobe, but in here I want to show you more fun and more adventurous way.

I love colour and most colourful things and the colour palette of this top is just so pretty. It’s easier to style than you may think. If you stick with the colours in this top (and there’s so many to chose from) that’s your palette for the rest of your look. I kept it simple with white skirt (which I have been wearing so much by the way – I wore it very different way here) and chose colourful accessories.

My main tip to wearing  a colourful item:

Stick to the same colour palette and don’t add any more colours that are not included in that item.

It’s ok to add neutrals and metallic jewellery but keep the rest fairly simple. Don’t overcomplicate the look and make the stripy (or other printed top) be the main focus. This look is quite fun and playful but you could totally make it more sophisticated with adding navy or black and put a blazer over it and you’re ready to work as well.

Sometimes people are afraid of stripes/prints but it’s all about the styling and the colour palette. Like I’ve mentioned few times: keep the rest simple. You can really style them up or down and have a little play with stripes.

What’s your favourite way to style stripes?

How to wear stripes: part 1 – jacket

howtowearstripesjacket1

I’m starting a new series today and every Wednesday I will share with you different ways to style an item of clothing or a trend. Starting with stripes. They’re not really trendy, they are timeless and that makes them even better. I love stripes! Put on a pair of jeans, classic Breton top and a pair of cute flats and you’re good to go and chic at the same time. It’s the safest option ever but works every time! I own several Breton tops and they really are a wardrobe staple but if you want to go a little further with your stripes, read on.

Today I’m showing you how to wear a stripy jacket, next time will be top (but not Breton) and then skirt. I wonder which look you will like the best, so make sure you let me know. I have a few stripy jackets as well (told you I loved stripes, I own more stripy items than I can admit) case in point here. In both cases I styled the jacket with a simple white top and jeans. I believe if you’re wearing a statement jacket (which this is what it essentially is) you want to keep the rest of the look simple. If you’re new to striped jacket especially, styling it with jeans is the easiest way.

If you want to look smarter, you can add a pair of cigarette or slim fit trousers. I would mostly keep the top white, because that really shows of the colours well and doesn’t take away the attention from the jacket. That’s your main focus and keep it that way. If you’re feeling playful and more confident with your stripes you can add a fun brooch to really add to the statement.

With accessories keep it simple too. You can choose the same colour shoes that can be found in your jacket, or go for nude or black. Don’t overdo it and really stick to few colours when you’re new to this. As you feel more confident with this look you can really play with it but I really would keep the jacket as your main statement piece and keep the rest simple.

Stripes are such a fun print and make your outfit pop without it looking like you’re trying too hard. They’re effortless but chic. There’s so many options. You can go for two colour or something very colourful and it will brighten your day.

Do you love stripes? Don’t forget to check out my next stripy look next Wednesday.

This post could easily be about the sequin cardi/jacket. It’s the best buy I’ve made in a while. I love it!
But I want to continue my little leopard series and concentrate on the shoes. They are so versatile and I feel every woman should own a pair of leopard stilletos. They really add something to an outfit.
