How to be happy

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Life can be very up and down but I had a really good week two weeks ago and a wonderful day when these photos were taken and it inspired me to write this post. I want to write about my amazing day not because I want to show off but because I want to inspire you to do things that you love and make the most of every day and be happy too.

I really believe that happiness is a state of mind and if you choose to be happy you can be. Don’t get me wrong I don’t feel happy all the time and I have my down days and many things that frustrate me, but I try to stay positive and overall I can say I am happy.

I am 37 single woman and my life is far from perfect but I always try to find time to do things I enjoy and that definitely makes me feel better. Yes I would love to meet someone wonderful to share my life with and do more things with a partner and have a family and home but in the meantime I will not sit at home, wait for my Prince Charming and be miserable.

I’m not going to lie the day when these photos were taken was quite an expensive one but it doesn’t have to be. Things I love include reading (doesn’t cost much) or even going for a walk (costs nothing). So on this particular day I met up a friend for an afternoon tea at the Sketch Gallery (pink heaven) and as much as I love to go somewhere super fancy once in a while meeting up with a good friend for a coffee and a cake is just as good. But I love dressing up and going somewhere special sometimes and why not. Save money elsewhere if you have to and treat yourself to a fancy lunch. You will love every minute.

We’ve been very lucky with the weather and October has been very mild and that day the weather was just gorgeous so I decided to walk my friend back to her place and then go for a walk in a park. I love walking and it’s really good not only for your body but also for the soul. I love London and often go for walks by the river or in the numerous parks. I sat there (in Hyde Park) for ages as well, feeling the Indian summer’s sun on my face. It felt so nice.

After I walked some more through some familiar and less familiar parts of London to the National Theatre. Can you believe it was my first time there? I love doing cultural things and I went to see Shakespeare’s play Anthony and Cleopatra, which I really enjoyed. Again it’s something I spent money on but can be done on a budget. I try to go to either ballet, opera, musical or a play every few months and I usually go for tickets in the middle price range but you can get really cheap ones too. And if you want to experience some culture without spending a penny, we’re very lucky in London because so many museums and galleries are free and there’s so much amazing art of show. I definitely recommend The National Gallery and also The Wallace Collection.

But if culture is not your thing that’s not a problem. We are all different and we all like different things. Think hard about what makes you happy and dedicate a time every week to do it and find joy in little things. Get out of your comfort zone, be spontaneous and try new things. You will find happiness I promise you.

My day was amazing and I loved every minute. It’s not something I can do every day. I don’t have time or money to do it every day, but it gives me so much joy it makes me smile for days. So it’s totally worth it. And I’m already looking forward to another day like this.

But I can tell you on another day in the same week I was very lucky with the weather again and went for a very long walk along the Thames and I only spent £15 that day in Costa for coffee, sandwich and a cake and then I took a boat ride on the river for the first time I’ve been living in London (!) and the day was just as lovely. In the evening I watched Strictly come dancing (I love that show) and that day filled me with as much joy. It really is not about spending money but realising what makes you happy and making sure you do it as much as you can.

What things make you happy?

Fall colour combinations: burnt orange

fallcolourcombinations6

Last week I talked to you about some new colour combinations I’m loving for autumn (see it again here) and there’s another colour I’m really into this season – burnt orange and its combinations with other colours.

I must admit I’ve never really been into any kind of orange much in the past but it’s a surprisingly flattering colour on most skin tones and it pairs so well with many other colours including pink (yes!). I’ve bought these trousers completely on a whim but I can tell you I’ve been wearing them so much. So far I’ve paired them with rust, pink, camel and off-white and not only they are super comfortable they literally go with everything. I’ve got another very different look coming up soon to show you a smarter more evening look so make sure you will come back to see that in couple of weeks.

In here I just threw in all the colours together and I think it actually works and shows how adaptable all these autumn colours are. If you look in the nature and the changing leaves they are all there (well except for pink).

What do you think of this look? Do you like burnt orange?

New colour combinations I’m loving for fall

fallcolourcombinations8

This fall I’ve been adding some new colours to my wardrobe, apart from the usual Burgundy that is always a popular addition this time of year, and I’ve been playing with new  colour combinations and I’m obsessed.

The new colours I’ve been adding are rust and burnt orange and who would have thought they’d pair so well with pink. I tend to wear my brighter colours like pinks, reds and oranges with more neutral colours like beiges or greys and even with navy but never with each other. Well this autumn I’ve been getting out of my comfort zone and I’m loving it.

I’m digging rust and pink and I’ll be wearing variations on this look in the coming months a lot. It’s a new combination to me and I’ve added neutral booties this time but I’m starting to get more adventurous even with that. I’ve added these Burgundy boots to my wardrobe and they are fun way to add colour to outfits and also loving these burnt orange ones.

Last week I started new series How to where I’ll be showing different ways to style things. You can read again part one here. I would love to know what you think.

Have you discovered any new colour combinations?

How to wear stripes: part 1 – jacket

howtowearstripesjacket1

I’m starting a new series today and every Wednesday I will share with you different ways to style an item of clothing or a trend. Starting with stripes. They’re not really trendy, they are timeless and that makes them even better. I love stripes! Put on a pair of jeans, classic Breton top and a pair of cute flats and you’re good to go and chic at the same time. It’s the safest option ever but works every time! I own several Breton tops and they really are a wardrobe staple but if you want to go a little further with your stripes, read on.

Today I’m showing you how to wear a stripy jacket, next time will be top (but not Breton) and then skirt. I wonder which look you will like the best, so make sure you let me know. I have a few stripy jackets as well (told you I loved stripes, I own more stripy items than I can admit) case in point here. In both cases I styled the jacket with a simple white top and jeans. I believe if you’re wearing a statement jacket (which this is what it essentially is) you want to keep the rest of the look simple. If you’re new to striped jacket especially, styling it with jeans is the easiest way.

If you want to look smarter, you can add a pair of cigarette or slim fit trousers. I would mostly keep the top white, because that really shows of the colours well and doesn’t take away the attention from the jacket. That’s your main focus and keep it that way. If you’re feeling playful and more confident with your stripes you can add a fun brooch to really add to the statement.

With accessories keep it simple too. You can choose the same colour shoes that can be found in your jacket, or go for nude or black. Don’t overdo it and really stick to few colours when you’re new to this. As you feel more confident with this look you can really play with it but I really would keep the jacket as your main statement piece and keep the rest simple.

Stripes are such a fun print and make your outfit pop without it looking like you’re trying too hard. They’re effortless but chic. There’s so many options. You can go for two colour or something very colourful and it will brighten your day.

Do you love stripes? Don’t forget to check out my next stripy look next Wednesday.

Say it with a tee

Paristee11

There’s so many things I want to tell you about this outfit I don’t know where to start..

First and possibly the most obvious. If you have been following me for some time you would know about my love for Paris and when I saw this tee shirt I knew I had to have it as a little reminder. I don’t wear tee shirts very often but I do like ones with little slogans that say it all so you don’t have to. Statement tops are quite a big trend and this is my little nod to it. I like to wear tees with dressier skirts to add a little edge – it’s a nice contrast.

Secondly I want to talk about my denim jacket. On the day we shot these it was so warm (only few days ago!) and I didn’t really need a jacket but this beautiful weather won’t last and layers will be more and more necessary. I also talked about layering in my last post, and I believe a denim jacket is a wardrobe staple that you will reach for time and time again, not just in fall. I bough this one on eBay about 13 years ago for under a £10 and it was the Best Buy ever. I can’t tell you how much I’ve worn it and it still looks great. I like that it’s quite fitted. Many denim jackets these days are too boxy and I prefer them shaped. It’s more feminine. I love to throw my denim jacket over dresses and wear them with skirts to dress down my outfits a little. If you haven’t got one you really need one and I linked to something similar for very good price.

I also want to talk about these shoes. Literally every time I wear them I get tons of compliments! Seriously, people on the street have stopped me to either compliment or even ask where they were from. And if I tell you they only cost £28 you’ll find it hard to believe. Here’s a link for you because I am nice and happy to share the compliments with you. They are also very comfortable and just go with about anything. They’re so pretty I wear them a lot and they always cheer me up.

Oh and the skirt? I’ve been wearing it a lot too. Another one of the great transitional items I love so much. It’s made from 100% cotton but it’s quite thick so you can wear it all year round which I’m definitely planning to do. In the winter I’ll just add boots and knitwear. The lenght is perfect and I am the biggest fan of anything with pockets. In my eyes everything should have pockets. Not that I put a lot in them but it’s just better.

On another note I am back to work today after a week off. But don’t think that I’ve been slacking and didn’t nothing all the time! I actually had a very busy week catching up with lot of friend and shooting a lot of content so now I can post regularly and won’t have any excuses. I am very happy with the images we got and can’t wait to show you all my autumn outfit and hopefully inspire you with some of them. Starting this Wednesday with a new series showing different ways to wear and item or a trend.

How is it October already? How have you been?

What every wardrobe needs – white shirt

whiteshirt1

After a bit of a summer break, I’m back again! And I really want to be sharing with you more styling tips and talk more about fashion because that’s what I love.

I love creating outfits in my head and planning what to wear tomorrow, the day after and the season ahead.. you get the picture. I’ve bought lots of new things for fall and winter and I’m doing a lot of shoots in the next couple of weeks and will show you my favourite trends and things to wear.

By now you may know that I don’t really follow trends and I prefer to stick to my style which is quite classic and timeless. I prefer pieces that you can wear for years to come, but I do like to mix it with trendier pieces to make it more interesting.

One piece however that is definitely a timeless item and I believe every woman should have in your wardrobe is a simple white shirt. I like mine in stretch cotton and have quite a few of them and also variations of them. White shirt is perfect for those days when you want to be effortless but stylish.

White shirt goes literally with everything and is suitable for any occasion. You can dress it down or up, wear it for work, coffee with friends and even a special occasion with the right outfit. I love wearing mine with jeans, skirts, trousers, you name it.

Roll up the sleeves, add denim cut offs and fancy flats for and effortless summer look. Now that we’re heading to autumn you can pair them with your favourite skirt (printed one gets bonus points) or keep it simple like me and just play with different colours.

The options are endless.

I’m thinking about doing a post about 3 ways to wear a white shirt: casual look, work and evening. Is that something you’d be interested in?

Fait Maison

faitmaison9

Forget Peggy Porschen, forget Elan Cafe, Fait Maison is the place to visit! This is a place that totally gets me and surprisingly it’s still under the radar! Well probably not for too long..

This place has everything! The most beautiful flower entrance that matches my favourite full skirt oh so well, the pretties and comfiest pink sofa in a corner surrounded by more flowers, cute details everywhere and that’s just the decor! The food is just as good and the coffee super instagrammable. But more about that next time. I must admit I’ve only discovered it recently but I’m already hooked!

Seriously the food is delicious: brunch favourites mixed with middle eastern cuisine, amazing selection of teas and coffees, cakes, macarons, you name it.. And the staff is very friendly. And don’t even get me started on the bathroom. You must visit the bathroom..

It’s very close to Gloucester Road station which is a very nice area anyway and there’s lots to do around. You’re just a stone throw away from V&A (one of my favourite museums) and they’ve go so many great exhibitions coming up you could totally make a day out of it. And by the way this is in NO WAY sponsored. I just write about things I love.

And now about the outfit. The skirt is super old Zara. I love wearing old Zara pieces because they’re still great but less people wear them after some time.. And I love this skirt. It’s super comfortable, has elasticated waist (who else loves elasticated waist?!) and pockets. Need I say more? Paired with a little off the shoulder top, all in cotton to survive this heat. And I’m in no way complaining about the heat by the way. I’m loving it! Bring on another month of this (apparently it’s coming).

You may or may not know that I’ve had a little surgery recently and I’m going to write more about it this Friday and share pictures of before and after. I’m very happy with the result so far and it’s not even healed properly yet.

Life feels good right now. Summer and sunshine definitely make me happy but I think things are going well anyway. Long may it last..
